Next Generation eCall will automatically alert 112 in case of road accidents

The national single emergency call service, 112, is launching the Next Generation eCall project. This innovative system automatically alerts emergency services in the event of a road accident, providing real-time information about the location and severity of the incident. This initiative aims to ensure faster and more efficient responses during emergencies.
A new modern telephone communications system connecting the 112 Service with telephone operators’ networks has been installed. This upgrade facilitates the use of modern technologies and provides citizens with more options to contact emergency services.
Currently, the project is in the testing and integration phase, with 60% completion.
In parallel, the 112 Service is working with the National Agency for Regulation in Electronic Communications and Information Technology (ANRCETI) to update the national legislative framework in line with European Union requirements regarding the interoperability of the eCall system.
These services are expected to be available starting in mid-2027, aimed at enhancing citizen safety and improving response efficiency in critical situations.
The project is funded by the European Union (EU) through the Connecting Europe Facility for Transport program. The total budget amounts to 19.2 million euros, allocated to 38 beneficiaries from eight EU Member States and six associated partners from four countries, with half of this total financed by the EU.
In the past year, the Single Emergency Service 112 registered 2.4 million calls, of which over 1.5 million were related to medical emergencies.
