Call of Life: How Alexandru Munteanu agreed to take on the role of Prime Minister

The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) candidate for prime minister, Alexandru Munteanu, confirmed that he had discussed the proposal to form the new government with both President Maia Sandu and the incumbent Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, before accepting it. The economist states that he did not set any conditions in exchange for accepting the position, and his priority is to form a professional and integrity team, which will continue the reforms and relaunch the country's economy.
"It's no secret, the Prime Minister said — he was my student. I would say it would have been logical for him to replace me as Prime Minister", Munteanu declared in a show on ProTV.
He also recounted the moment when he was contacted by the head of state.
"It was a beautiful evening, I was sitting with my wife, making plans, and the phone rang. I didn't know who it was, but I recognized the voice of the President. She said to me: 'Actually, you realize that I'm calling you to tell you something else'. After that discussion, I had two sleepless nights, in which I spoke with my family and close friends", Munteanu reported.
The economist emphasized that accepting the proposal was not an easy decision, as he is aware of the responsibility of the position. However, he says that he viewed this challenge as a duty to the country.
“A few days ago I was a free person, thinking about vacations and universities. Today I am in the Republic of Moldova, because I feel that it is my duty to contribute to the future of this country. It is, in a way, a calling of life”, concluded Alexandru Munteanu.
The President Maia Sandu confirmed that she personally contacted Alexandru Munteanu, after analyzing several options for the head of the Government. The head of state mentioned that she has known Alexandru Munteanu since the 1990s, when he worked at the National Bank of Moldova and, later, at the World Bank. The head of state mentioned that he is a man with managerial experience, who shares our values, is good at economics and “is the right man” to lead the government team in the coming years.
We recall that the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, leader of the Action and Solidarity Party, announced on October 14, on social networks, that Alexandru Munteanu – economist, university professor and businessman with a career of over 25 years in the field of international investments – will be proposed by PAS for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, after the validation of the deputy mandates by the Constitutional Court and the convening of the meeting to establish the new Parliament by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
