One in three breast cancer cases detected late in Moldova

The number of breast cancer cases, which is the most common type of cancer among women in the Republic of Moldova, is on the rise. One-third of these cases are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease, when treatments are often ineffective.

Data from the Ministry of Health shows that currently over 11,800 women in the Republic of Moldova suffer from breast cancer.

The late detection rate—approximately 34.8%—remains a major cause for concern, having a direct impact on the effectiveness of treatment and prognosis,” states the institution, which encourages women to go to the doctor regularly to detect possible health problems early.

Within the framework of the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program, implemented in the Republic of Moldova, over 20,000 women have been examined in recent years, of which 178 were confirmed with breast cancer and 497 - with benign or precancerous pathologies.

According to the Ministry of Health, over 75% of these cases were detected in the early stages, which allowed for effective treatments and significantly higher chances of recovery.

There are four regional early detection centers in the Republic of Moldova:

Chisinau: Republican Center for Medical Diagnostics

Balti: Balti Clinical Hospital

Ungheni: Ungheni Health Center (also covers the districts of Nisporeni, Calarasi, Falesti)

Causeni: Causeni District Hospital

We remind you that October is the month of breast cancer awareness in the Republic of Moldova.

According to official data, approximately 10,000 new cases of malignant tumors are registered in the Republic of Moldova annually, which places cancer in second place among non-communicable diseases in terms of incidence. Malignant tumors contribute 12.6% to the general mortality of the population, being the second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.
