EU-backed volunteer fire posts bolster safety across rural Moldova
Volunteer firefighters, increasing in number across Moldova, are always ready for a new mission, despite not being paid professionals.

They recently competed in a festival, demonstrating their capabilities rival those of professional firefighters. The fourth annual Volunteer Firefighters’ Festival attracted 170 participants. The junior category prize was claimed by the team from Sadaclia, in the Basarabeasca District.
"I like being a firefighter, and I think it is important to save people from fires and other emergencies. We took first place, and the entire team is very happy with the result," said Alex Cașu, a volunteer firefighter from Sadaclia.
In the senior category, the volunteer firefighters from Capaclia, Cantemir District, ranked first.
"Our post was established seven years ago, as one of the first three set up that year. Our experience has contributed to the success we achieved today," mentioned Alexandru Busuioc, a firefighter from Capaclia.
They cite their commitment to the community as their primary motivation, as they are unpaid.
"It is necessary, to ensure the safety and security of people who need our service."
"Our village is quite large, with many residents. We are here to support and assist our citizens."
"I believe that volunteering is one of the most beautiful things someone can do for their native village."
"In recent years, the way we view volunteering has changed; we no longer talk about a gesture of goodwill, but a mature form of social participation, an expression of solidarity, and an education for life," stated Daniela Misail-Nichitin, the Minister of Internal Affairs.
The European Union is supporting the construction and renovation of ten new volunteer fire posts, in addition to renovating ten existing ones, across Moldova.
"In the event of a disaster, every minute counts. Volunteer firefighters are always the first to intervene. You are neighbors helping neighbors, citizens protecting their communities," declared Iwona Piorko, the European Union Ambassador to Moldova.
Currently, 35 volunteer fire posts are operational in Moldova.
