Chisinau residents urged to report homeless people to authorities: 27 homeless people hospitalized with suspected TB

Chisinau residents are urged to report to the representatives of the Municipal Accommodation and Orientation Center for Homeless Persons cases of people in difficulty or in need of support. Some of these end up in critical situations, requiring emergency hospitalization due to both their poor health and the risk they may pose to those around them.

During the current year, the Center’s mobile team, consisting of a lawyer, psychologist and social worker, transported 27 homeless people to the hospital, with suspicions of TB. At the same time, 20 people were accommodated in the Center, and another 62, who refused accommodation, were medically examined, reported on Monday, October 20, at the meeting of the Chisinau City Hall, the director of the institution, Veaceslav Macovei.

“If you notice people in difficulty or who need support, please contact the Center at the numbers 022 354 038 or 022 354 039, or call 112 in urgent cases”, urged Veaceslav Macovei.

According to the director of the Municipal Accommodation and Orientation Center for Homeless Persons, the institution he runs offers complex social and medical-social services, including temporary accommodation, daily meals, personal hygiene services, social and psychological assistance, primary medical support, legal counseling, support in obtaining identity documents and professional orientation.

“According to data for the first nine months of this year, 767 people benefited from the Center’s services, 26 more than last year. Of these, 494 were men, and 273 were women. The majority, or 686 people, come from Chisinau municipality, 74 from the country’s districts, and seven are stateless. During this period, 134 people with locomotor difficulties were accommodated, eight were transferred to specialized institutions, and 22 are currently in the Center, requiring permanent care. In total, 79 people are currently accommodated”, Macovei reported.

The director emphasized that the institution's efforts are focused on the social and family reintegration of the beneficiaries.

During the period January - September, 81 people were reintegrated into the family, 82 - socially reintegrated, and 58 were officially employed.

Also, 120 people were assisted in the process of completing identity documents, of which 84 obtained them, and 34 received support for establishing the degree of disability. Another 48 people benefited from support in the process of establishing or recalculating their pension.

In collaboration with the National Employment Agency, 205 people benefited from professional counseling, and 58 were subsequently employed.

The center, subordinated to the Chisinau City Hall and the General Directorate of Medical and Social Assistance, has been operating since 2004 and has a capacity of 100 places, with the possibility of expanding to 150, in exceptional cases.
