Indoor humidity risks: How to protect your health and home

A high level of indoor humidity promotes the growth of mold and bacteria. Pulmonologist Rodica Corcodel stated on the show “Morning with Radio Moldova” that damp air directly affects respiratory health and immunity.

“Humid air creates favorable conditions for mold and bacteria that directly impact the respiratory system and immunity. Negative effects include chronic respiratory exacerbations and worsening conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. Cold, humid air keeps viruses and bacteria active longer, increasing the risk of colds and flu. High humidity reduces the body’s resistance to cold,” Dr. Corcodel explained.

The World Health Organization recommends humidity levels in the home between 40 and 60 percent. Daily ventilation, even in winter for 5–10 minutes in the morning and evening, is the simplest measure. Dr. Corcodel also emphasizes the use of the kitchen hood, bathroom fan, and, if possible, a dehumidifier.

Avoid drying clothes indoors. Excessive humidity affects both health and daily comfort. In a high-humidity room, the air feels heavy and oppressive.

Signs of high indoor humidity include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, persistent cough, chest pressure, nasal congestion, and sneezing. A hygrometer helps monitor moisture levels at home.

For new homes or apartments, material choice is critical. Interior designer Olga Zelinschi advises improving home ventilation with heat recovery systems and slim ventilation grilles that blend with interior design. Use moisture-resistant materials, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. For floors and walls, she recommends tiles and SPC.

In already furnished homes, control humidity with breathable materials such as solid wood, natural gypsum boards, or natural textiles. Plants manage humidity and add a natural touch. Furniture should allow air circulation, leaving small gaps at the top and bottom.

Maintaining proper indoor humidity ensures easier breathing, better sleep, and a healthier living environment.
