Last rabies vaccine batch of the year: 2,800 doses reach ANSP

The National Vaccine Depot within the National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) has received about 2,800 doses of rabies vaccine - the last batch of this year.

The National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) has allocated over 380,000 lei for the vaccine, which is funded by the prevention measures fund.

According to a press release from the institution, the vaccine meets the required contractual specifications, and the delivery maintained the continuous cold chain throughout the entire route.

The anti-rabies serum is administered to prevent rabies in both children and adults, as part of primary immunization and in cases of exposure to the rabies virus.

In total, 17,500 vaccine doses were purchased for 2025, valued at 2.3 million lei.

We recall that the first batch of rabies vaccine this year arrived in the Republic of Moldova in January, with 7,000 doses of vaccine and 42 vials of anti-rabies immunoglobulin delivered.

In the context of accelerated consumption, the medical authorities announced a new purchase at the beginning of June, even though they initially intended to replenish stocks in August.

The ANSP management mentioned at the time that increasing the quantities of vaccine purchased was not a solution, as policies were needed to manage the growing number of stray dogs in localities.

The institution confirmed the most recent rabies case on October 8, involving a dog from the Târzieni locality in the Orhei district. The authorities then assured that they had applied quarantine and veterinary control measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

The last human case of rabies in the Republic of Moldova occurred in 2019. An 11-year-old child died after being attacked by an infected dog in a camp in the Ciorescu locality, a suburb of the capital. The child was hospitalized a month later, when he had no chance of recovery.

The rabies virus can be transmitted through the bite of a sick animal and attacks the central nervous system. The vaccine must be administered until symptoms appear; otherwise, it is no longer effective.

Once symptoms appear, the condition is almost always fatal.
