CNPF investigates the launch of a "cryptocurrency" in the Republic of Moldova

The National Commission for Financial Markets (CNPF) has launched an investigation into the introduction of a so-called "cryptocurrency" by a private company, as announced during a press conference on November 4. The commission is assessing the extent to which the company's actions comply with existing legal regulations.
According to the CNPF, the decision to initiate a self-referral was made "considering the public nature of the communication and the fact that the offer is directed at the general public (non-professionals)." After completing the investigation, the authority will provide additional information and, "where appropriate, the necessary measures," as stated in a press release from the institution.
The CNPF reminds everyone that, according to legal norms regarding the prevention and combating of money laundering and terrorist financing, "the provision of services related to virtual assets is prohibited on the territory of the Republic of Moldova." Additionally, commercial banks and other financial institutions "are not permitted to process transactions of residents with cryptocurrency service providers authorized in other countries if the cumulative volume exceeds the equivalent of 50,000 lei per month."
In the issued press release, the CNPF urged citizens to exercise caution and "invest only through authorized service providers in the Republic of Moldova."
