Chișinău hosts major congress on global respiratory disease prevention

The first National Congress of Pulmonology was held in Chișinău, marking a significant event for the medical community in the Republic of Moldova.
Specialists from both Moldova and Romania convened to discuss effective methods for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, a primary global contributor to mortality.
The Congress was organised to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the "Nicolae Testemițanu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF). Organisers stated that the forum is designed to become a key benchmark for medical practice across the country.
Doina Rusu, director of the Institute of Pulmonology, underscored the event's importance. "Our primary focus is on respiratory diseases. As we know, they rank among the leading causes of illness and mortality globally," she said. "This event is designed to gather internationally recognised experts for a crucial knowledge exchange."
"Chronic and acute respiratory pathologies are frequently encountered and have a significant impact on both society and individual health," noted Alexandru Corlăteanu, president of the Coalition for Respiratory Health. "The Congress helps us to detect these pathologies more efficiently."
The prestigious event successfully brought together experts from both the host country and abroad.
Florin-Dumitru Mihălțan, president of the Society of Pulmonology, highlighted the need for systemic change: "Very little attention is still paid to prevention, and I am not just talking about the Republic of Moldova, but also about our country, Romania." He stressed that strategies must be coherent, dialogue with authorities must be maintained, and the multidisciplinary approach must be embraced.
Pneumologist Dumitru Chesov focused on the practical application of the knowledge gained. "Every participant in this Congress will return to their workplace next week," he explained. "Whether they are seeing chronic patients they have known for years or new patients, they will endeavour to apply and implement this new knowledge."
The Congress was organised by the Discipline of Pulmonology and Allergology of the "Nicolae Testemițanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, in partnership with the "Chiril Draganiuc" Institute of Pulmonology, the Coalition for Respiratory Health of Moldova, and other specialised societies.
