Moldova’s average salary is 10 times lower than in the EU’s highest-paying country

In the Republic of Moldova, employees earn half as much as those in Bulgaria, which has the lowest salaries in the European Union (EU). However, compared to salaries in Luxembourg, the EU's highest-earning country, Moldovan workers receive 10 times less.
Data from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) indicates that the average salary for employees in Luxembourg in 2024 was €6,914 per month, amounting to nearly €83,000 annually.
At the bottom of the EU salary rankings is Bulgaria, where the average monthly salary is €1,283.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the average salary in the Republic of Moldova for 2024 was 13,990 lei, roughly equivalent to €682. By the second quarter of this year, the average monthly salary had increased to 15,470 lei, which is about €788.

At the EU level, the average annual adjusted full-time salary was €39,800 in 2024, up 5.2% from €37,800 in 2023.

Among the EU countries with the highest average annual adjusted full-time salaries are Denmark, with an average of €5,966 per month or €71,592 per year, and Ireland, with an average of €61,100 in 2024.
At the other end of the ranking, the five countries with the lowest average salaries are Romania, with approximately €1,800 per month, followed by Slovakia at €1,690, Hungary at €1,541, Greece at €1,500, and Bulgaria at €1,283.
