Maia Sandu: Moldova’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will support “a just peace” in Ukraine

The Presidency of the Republic of Moldova in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE) has adopted the motto "For a Europe of peace and resilience." This presidency will prioritize promoting peace, supporting mechanisms for achieving "a just peace" in Ukraine, and strengthening democratic resilience across the continent.
At the same time, following three elections in two years that were marked by foreign interference, the Republic of Moldova is prepared to actively contribute to European efforts to protect democracies from hybrid threats.
These statements were made by President Maia Sandu during a meeting on Friday, November 21, with Alain Berset, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, who was visiting Chișinău.
President Sandu reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova's strong commitment to being “a constructive European partner, dedicated to peace, democracy, and the rule of law.”
During discussions with the European official, the President expressed gratitude for the Council of Europe's ongoing support to enhance institutional capacities and advance reforms in the justice sector, as outlined in the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova (2025-2028).
According to President Sandu, this document is an essential tool for strengthening the independence and integrity of the judicial system, aligning legislation with European standards, and increasing the transparency and accessibility of state institutions for the benefit of citizens.
“These reforms, expected by society and supported by European partners, are vital for advancing our process of accession to the European Union,” the Head of State emphasized.
We remind you that the Republic of Moldova officially assumed the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on November 14, a mandate it will hold until May 15, 2026.
Among the priorities of the Republic of Moldova, as previously announced by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, are support for Ukraine and the establishment of a special tribunal for crimes of aggression committed by the Russian Federation, as well as the defense of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
