The Ministry of Education and Research is launching a national awareness campaign to highlight the risks associated with the consumption and trafficking of narcotic substances. This initiative responds to reports of alleged drug sales occurring on or near educational institutions.

Starting in December, particularly during the second semester of the school year, we will launch an information and prevention campaign for students and teachers across the country. This campaign will focus on raising awareness about the risks of drug use and, perhaps more importantly, explaining how individuals can report suspected drug trafficking to law enforcement agencies," declared Minister Dan Perciun.

The official urged students, teachers, and mayors to alert law enforcement if they have any information regarding potential drug trafficking cases. "It is essential for the police to intervene promptly whenever these incidents occur," emphasized Dan Perciun, noting that these informational efforts will be supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Drug trafficking presents a significant challenge for the Republic of Moldova, as confirmed by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin. Since the beginning of the year, over 900 criminal cases related to drug trafficking have been registered.

Before the government meeting on November 26, Minister Misail-Nichitin stated that the Ministry of Internal Affairs has proposed stricter penalties for drug trafficking offences. "Similarly, we will also impose harsher penalties for individuals who involve minors in these activities," she added.

Earlier this week, the General Directorate of Education, Youth, and Sports of Chisinau urged teachers to discuss the risks associated with drug use with their students, following an initiative from the General Inspectorate of Police.

The mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, called for the involvement of the government, police, and prosecutor’s office to effectively address the growing issue of drug use among young people, which, according to him, has spiralled out of control.

According to data presented by the General Inspectorate of Police, 18 cases of drug trafficking were uncovered in the capital within just one week.
