Japan provides 21 million lei for "Teleradio-Moldova" Company equipment upgrade

The Government of Japan is providing a grant of 21 million lei to support the modernization of the "Teleradio-Moldova" Company (TRM). This investment aims to facilitate the purchase of modern audiovisual equipment and to enhance the quality of public media services. On November 26, the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy approved a recommendation to initiate negotiations on the Grant Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of Japan.
The project aims to modernize the technical infrastructure of TRM, enhance the professional skills of its employees, and align production processes with international standards, particularly as the technical infrastructure urgently needs updating.
The grant will specifically focus on equipping Moldova 2, the public station, and the music studio used by the TRM National Symphony Orchestra.
TRM General Director Vlad Țurcanu and Deputy General Director for Television Andrei Zapșa are currently in Tokyo, where they are discussing the operationalization of the project.
The collaboration with the Japanese side has been developed and coordinated over the past two years in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
"We are pleased to finalize the documentation for this grant project. We sincerely thank the Japanese government for their generous support, which reflects recognition of our reform efforts and our credibility with development partners. After nearly two years of hard work with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, we are committed to strengthening and expanding our relationship through additional major projects for public television. We are continuously working on it", said Andrei Zapșa.
The announcement regarding this grant was initially made in November 2024 by His Excellency Yamada Yoichiro, the former Ambassador of Japan to Chișinău.
The topic was also recently discussed at a meeting between Dumitru Socolan, the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Japan, and Ayano Kunimitsu, the Japanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. During this meeting, the officials addressed the state of bilateral relations, cooperation in combating disinformation and hybrid threats, and the Moldovan side expressed gratitude for Japan's support to TRM through JICA.
Once negotiations are completed and the Grant Agreement is signed between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and Japan, it will be presented to Parliament for ratification.
