Government drafts new reintegration strategy as 5+2 format becomes obsolete

The government in Chisinau is currently working on a strategy for the reintegration of the Republic of Moldova, as the "5+2" dialogue format is no longer applicable. This announcement was made by Valeriu Chiveri, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, following a government meeting on December 3.
The necessity for such a document arises from the fact that two key players in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, Ukraine and the Russian Federation, are currently engaged in direct armed conflict. As Valeriu Chiveri noted, “it is very difficult to imagine that they could continue to be part of the settlement of another conflict.”
However, the official declined to provide further details about the strategy, emphasizing that “sensitive issues require discretion.”
Chiveri stated, “Indeed, we are actively working on a reintegration strategy. But, as you know, sensitive issues require discretion in resolving or documenting matters that could have long-term effects. Most of the time, we cannot discuss the actions being taken in real time, as this could jeopardize the final outcome.”
The Deputy Prime Minister assured that “the results of these activities will be presented to the public at the right time.”
In the context of a potential peace negotiation package between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration clarified that the Republic of Moldova does not intend to be “part of a conflict settlement package, but rather part of a regional security package.”
“For us, this would solely aim at the withdrawal of Russian military forces from the region. Regarding the actual settlement of the conflict in the Republic of Moldova, we are committed to facilitating a negotiation process that includes both Tiraspol and the international partners who support us, primarily the European Union, the United States, and the OSCE,” concluded Valeriu Chiveri.
Since the Russian Federation began its war in Ukraine, the "5+2" dialogue format has been suspended. This format includes representatives from Chisinau and Tiraspol, the parties to the conflict, as well as Russia, Ukraine, and the OSCE as mediators, with the EU and the USA serving as observers.
In recent years, dialogue between the two banks of the Nistru has been limited to political representatives from Chisinau and Tiraspol.
