Electricity compensation ends: Munteanu reminds citizens it was a temporary solution

From February to December 2025, the state provided compensations for electricity consumption. However, these payments will cease in 2026. Authorities stated that this measure was temporary and funded by a support package from the European Union.
From the beginning, it was clear that the current measures would be temporary. However, we continue to explore options to support the most vulnerable segments of the population. “Many of the general aid programs did not necessarily target those who need it most,” declared Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu before the Government meeting on December 4.
As of February this year, the state began compensating the first 110 kWh of electricity bills. All citizens benefited from this aid, whether or not they registered on the government platform at compensatii.gov.md.
Thus, household consumers continued to pay the first 110 kWh at the existing tariff until January 2025, and the state covered the difference once the tariff increased.
For example, consumers served by S.A. FEE-Nord paid a tariff of 2.48 lei/kWh for the first 110 kWh on their invoices, which was the rate in effect until January 9, 2025. The state covered the difference up to the new tariff of 4.68 lei/kWh that took effect after that date.
For businesses, the Government compensated 50% of the increase in electricity tariffs.
The electricity compensations were funded by the 250 million euro emergency aid granted by the European Union earlier this year, in response to the energy crisis caused by Gazprom's cessation of gas supplies to the Transnistrian region. This region had provided electricity at low costs to the right bank of the Nistru.
Additionally, the Government will continue to provide heat compensations. For the cold season of 2025-2026, the maximum ceilings for thermal energy, natural gas, and electricity are set at 1,000 lei per month, while for solid fuels, the ceiling is 800 lei.
In total, over 780,000 citizens applied for heating compensation for November 2025.
