Transnistrian patient Nicolae Gheicenco finally placed in care center

Soroca's Happy Ending: A week ago, we shared the story of Nicolae Gheicenco, a Transnistrian patient admitted to the Soroca District Hospital after a stroke.

Lacking identification papers, local authorities struggled for eight months to secure his placement in a social placement center in Moldova. That struggle finally ended a few days ago.

We met Nicolae at the Bădiceni Care and Assistance Center for the Elderly, where he has found a secure home.

"He benefits from all the rights like the other residents, even though he has not yet received official pensioner status or a disability rating," noted Angela Brighidin, Head of the Placement Center. "The environment is warm and comfortable."

When he was initially hospitalized, the man possessed no documents. Doctors provided essential care but could not legally discharge him. Nicolae remained in the hospital for over eight months, and the institution covered approximately 200,000 lei (around $11,000) in costs for his extensive medical treatment and stroke recovery.

Nicolae will initially reside at the Bădiceni Placement Center for the next three months. Once officially assigned a degree of disability, he will be eligible to remain in the institution for life, joining the other 50 beneficiaries.
