Generational Polish Christmas traditions in Stârcea village

The Polish community in Stârcea, Glodeni district, embraced the spirit of the winter holiday. Caroling, traditional meals, and heartfelt moments characterized Christmas Eve - "Wigilia," one of the most significant holidays for the Polish community.

Locals are eagerly anticipating Christmas, as traditions passed down through generations—such as caroling and the festive meal—are cherished and preserved.

“Every year, we gather with others to share in the excitement of the holidays. It is a unique experience; we enjoy ourselves, deepen our faith in God, and connect with one another, which allows us to get to know each other better,” one local shared.

“Every Christmas Eve, people from all over come together to celebrate. This tradition has become a part of who we are, and we want to pass it on to our children,” another added.

“Christmas brings joy to our homes and our village. We hope that Jesus will bring peace to the entire world,” a villager said.

The traditional festive meal features 12 meatless dishes, symbolizing the 12 apostles.

“We invite grandmothers, relatives, and children to join us in this warm celebration. Together, with our collective efforts, we prepare a special fasting meal,” said Iana Postuhova, a representative of the Polish House in Stârcea.

A Polish tradition on this day is the opłatek ritual. Each person breaks off a piece of a thin wafer and exchanges it with others, offering wishes for health, happiness, and well-being.

"Health! That's the most important thing—health for the whole family!"

Christmas Eve, known as "Wigilia," is regarded as the most significant holiday of the year for Poles. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and family togetherness, as they anticipate the birth of Jesus.
