Moldova railway reform: Single freight train replaces 100-truck convoy

Railway transport is a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova. Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea emphasized that recent logistics tests prove the sector's immense potential for the nation's future.

A recent test run involving a 3,000-ton freight train on a newly reopened segment demonstrated high efficiency. According to Bolea, a single rail journey can remove up to 100 heavy-duty trucks from national roads.

Economic and environmental impact

The test train transported gravel from Ukraine to Cahul, in southern Moldova, for road construction projects. This shift from road to rail results in significant financial savings and protects the existing road infrastructure from wear.

"Expanding railway capacity is a strategic direction," stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development. He noted that rail transport is more economical, environmentally friendly, and faster for bulk logistics.

Structural reorganization of CFM

The State Enterprise "Moldovan Railway" (CFM) is set to undergo a major reorganization. Under the new plan, CFM Infrastructure will remain strictly under state ownership and will not be privatized.

In contrast, the commercial branches—CFM Freight and CFM Passenger—will be managed by economic operators. These units will compete openly with other transport companies in the Moldovan market.

Financial recovery and wage arrears

The government reports improved stability following leadership changes at the enterprise. Wage arrears, which stood at nine months at the start of the year, were reduced to three months by December.

Management has shifted toward a rigorous commercial mindset. By focusing on high-volume freight and accurate cost calculations, the enterprise aims to achieve long-term profitability and operational efficiency.
