Moldova boosts border security with the opening of a new headquarters

The Republic of Moldova is enhancing its border security with the inauguration of the new headquarters for the Passenger Information Directorate (PID). This facility, which opened on January 14, represents a significant investment that will facilitate the swift identification of risks, enable authorities to make quicker decisions, and promote safer travel for citizens.

The new headquarters provides modern working conditions and digital technologies that allow for real-time analysis of passenger data. This capability helps prevent cross-border threats, protect borders, and maintain public order.

“This represents a significant advancement in the state's ability to anticipate risks and safeguard the security of citizens. We are investing in modern infrastructure, digital tools, and well-trained personnel to ensure that decisions are based on accurate data, resulting in fast and coordinated responses that benefit every citizen of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, during the inauguration event.

The Passenger Information Directorate serves as the mechanism for collecting, analyzing, and utilizing passenger data through Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Records (PNR). The digital technologies employed enable swift risk identification and real-time analysis of information, supporting the prevention of border threats and operational investigations by competent authorities.

To date, UIP specialists have analyzed tens of thousands of individuals, monitored the activities of approximately 30 airlines, and processed information related to several million passengers and tens of thousands of flights. Based on the risk profiles created, hundreds of control measures have been implemented.

“These actions have aided in the investigation of transnational crimes and significant threats to state security, thanks to cooperation with national authorities and data exchange with international security institutions,” noted the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

This project was executed with the support of international partners, including the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism.
