The Republic of Moldova and Cyprus begin talks on a Social Security Agreement

The Republic of Moldova and Cyprus are starting negotiations to sign a Social Security Agreement. This announcement was made by the Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Natalia Plugaru, following her meeting with the Cypriot Minister, Marinos Moushouttas, and the Deputy Minister of Social Protection, Clea Hadjistephanou Papaellina. The agreement is expected to offer additional protections to Moldovan citizens who are currently working or have previously worked in Cyprus.

Natalia Plugaru stated that the authorities in Chisinau are prepared to start technical consultations as soon as possible to ensure that citizens receive complete social protection and continuity in their rights, regardless of the country in which they worked.

"We continue our reforms and strengthen European partnerships for a Moldova that is closer to its people," the minister said.

"We discussed the reforms we are implementing in the Republic of Moldova and the support of Cyprus for our European path. A top priority is initiating negotiations for a bilateral Social Security Agreement. This agreement will guarantee the protection of pension rights and social benefits, the recognition of work periods, and legal security for workers. We are ready to begin technical consultations as soon as possible," Natalia Plugaru noted.

The signing of such an agreement is considered essential for the Moldovan diaspora, as it will allow for the accumulation of work periods completed in both countries when determining pensions and accessing certain social benefits. In the absence of a bilateral mechanism, many workers risk losing the benefits of the years they worked abroad, Plugaru emphasized.

While visiting Cyprus, the minister also examined the country's experience in fully digitalizing public services, facilitating online registration of employment contracts, and reducing bureaucracy.

Over the years, more than ten bilateral agreements have been signed between the Republic of Moldova and Cyprus.
