Parliament holds moments of silence for Ukraine war victims and Nistru heroes

During the session on February 26, deputies of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova stood up twice to observe moments of silence. They honored those who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the victims of the war in Ukraine.

The Speaker of Parliament, Igor Grosu, stated that more than three decades have passed since the armed conflict on the Nistru, yet "the wounds of that war remain open in the hearts of many families."

"All these years, the Russian Federation has continued to divide us, making us enemies. However, people on both sides of the Nistru desire the same simple and natural things: peace, security, jobs, justice, and confidence in tomorrow," emphasized Igor Grosu.

Thirty-four years after the conflict, deputies are invited to participate in a commemorative march and rally on March 2, in observance of the Day of Memory and Gratitude.

“Together, let us honor the sacrifices of our heroes—their courage and resilience. Let us observe a moment of silence for all those who lost their lives in this unjust armed conflict,” urged the Speaker of Parliament.

A moment of silence was also held for the victims of the war in Ukraine: “those who fell on the front lines, civilians who were killed, and all those who suffered due to the invasion.”

“It has been four years since the commencement of the brutal and unjustified invasion of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. This war of aggression has brought death, destruction, and suffering to millions: thousands of civilians killed, children abducted by war, hospitals and schools bombed, and cities turned into ruins. The Republic of Moldova stands in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We are grateful to our neighbors for their courage in defending their freedom, country, and future. Their resistance also defends the peace and security of the entire region, including the Republic of Moldova,” stated Igor Grosu.

The agenda for the February 26 session also includes adopting a declaration in support of Ukraine. Deputies, regardless of political affiliation, were urged to “show responsibility, moral clarity, and solidarity” in their support.

Every year, on March 2, a series of activities are organized in the Republic of Moldova to mark the beginning of the fighting actions in 1992 and to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country's sovereignty. Since 2021, this day has been designated the Day of Memory and Gratitude, established by Parliament's decision on February 12.

This year's events will traditionally commence with a laying of flowers and a march in Chisinau, from the Great National Assembly Square to the "Eternitate" Memorial Complex, where a commemorative rally will take place. The program was approved by the Government during its February 18 meeting.
