Spring begins with a symbol of renewal: the Legend of Mărțișor, presented by the country’s leadership

On March 1, the first day of spring, the Republic of Moldova celebrates Martisor, a symbol of rebirth. On this day, the country's leadership published a video message sharing the legend of Martisor.

Today, as we celebrate the first day of spring, we honor Martisor—a symbol of rebirth, hope, and solidarity. The legend of Martisor teaches us that after every hardship, a new beginning emerges; sacrifice and kindness give rise to hope. It is essential to remember that, regardless of the challenges we face, we have traditions, a culture we take pride in, and a future that we must build together, noted Igor Grosu, Parliament Speaker, on his Facebook page.

Spring begins for us with a symbol of life and renewal. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu emphasized, "The Martisor, consisting of a white thread intertwined with a red thread, reminds us of our people's courage and the revival of nature. Let us wear the Martisor with pride, as a sign of hope, peace, and good wishes for all those who seek tranquility and safety."

Martisor in the Republic of Moldova: Traditions and customs of March 1

In the Republic of Moldova, March 1 is one of the most anticipated and cherished days of the year, with Martisor serving as the central symbol of nature's rebirth, luck, health, and joy.

The traditional Martisor consists of a cord made from two threads—a white one, symbolizing purity, snow, wisdom, and light, and a red one, symbolizing life, blood, fertility, fire, and vitality. At the end of the string, a small decorative object is usually attached, such as a coin, flower, heart, four-leaf clover, horseshoe, bell, or other symbols of prosperity.

Today, Martisors come in many forms—from classic handmade versions made of wool or silk to modern jewelry, ethnographic figurines, and motifs inspired by Moldovan folk culture.

The International Music Festival "Martisor" is one of the most beautiful and anticipated cultural events in the country, closely linked to the Martisor tradition. The jubilee edition of the festival runs from March 1 to 12 in Chisinau, celebrating its 60th installment. This year's festival will feature over 20 events, including symphony concerts, opera, ballet, chamber recitals, and special projects. The theme for this year is " The joy of being together".
