Moldova’s green transition: €1.8 million EU investment for modern recycling centers

The municipalities of Călărași and Ungheni are set to modernize their waste management systems with the launch of specialized drop-off recycling hubs (CAVs) by autumn 2027.
The project is fully funded by the European Union through the "Facilitating an Inclusive Green Transition in the Republic of Moldova" initiative, implemented by UNDP Moldova. The total investment is estimated at €1.8 million (approx. 35.1 million MDL).
Strategic infrastructure for circular economy
These specialized hubs will allow residents to responsibly dispose of bulky waste, electronics, batteries, and recyclable materials such as glass, wood, and textiles.
The city of Leova will also receive technical support to develop its own design and planning phase for a similar facility.
Efficient collection and processing
Each center will feature dedicated containers for specific waste categories to ensure high-efficiency sorting. All collected materials will be transferred to authorized companies for professional recycling or recovery.
Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027, with the facilities becoming fully operational by the end of the same year.
A sustainable future
These hubs are designed to build a modern, responsible waste management system that protects the environment and promotes sustainable living.
This initiative aligns with national legislation requiring local authorities to establish efficient systems for waste collection, transport, and recovery.
