Heavy traffic at Leușeni exit; Border Police suggest alternative routes

On the morning of Thursday, March 5, increased passenger and vehicle traffic was reported at the Leușeni-Albița border crossing point while exiting the Republic of Moldova, according to the Border Police.

According to the authorities, border congestion is also influenced by the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) at the crossing point. This system involves additional control procedures, which may affect the duration of border crossings.

The EES also applies to citizens of the Republic of Moldova who are traveling to Romania and other European Union member states for short stays. During their first entry after the system's full operationalization, biometric data will be collected to create an individual profile. For subsequent crossings, verification will be conducted automatically using the already recorded information, which is expected to shorten control times over time.

Representatives from the Border Police have stated that control teams are working at maximum capacity and that the authorities are taking measures to improve cross-border traffic flow.

To avoid long wait times, travellers are encouraged to choose alternative border crossing points in advance, such as Costești, Leova, or Cahul.
