World Water Day: Environment Minister stresses water’s vital role as source of life

On World Water Day, marked on March 22, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to the protection and sustainable management of water resources. The Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, noted that during this period, the importance of water is highlighted not only as a resource, but also as an essential element for life, safety and balance.
"These days, we have all realized how important water is—not just as a resource, but as a source of life, safety, and balance. On World Water Day, we look with gratitude toward those who have been on the front lines along the Nistru, working tirelessly to protect people, nature, and our future. Water unites us, but it also holds us accountable. Let us value it and protect it," said the Minister of the Environment.
We remind you that the main water sources in the Republic of Moldova are the Nistru and the Prut rivers. The Nistru River provides water for approximately 80 percent of the country's population. At the same time, the total volume of groundwater extracted during the period 2020 - 2024 was over 1.2 billion tons, according to data from the Ministry of Environment.
World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 worldwide, including in the Republic of Moldova, as an initiative of the United Nations since 1993. The main goal is to draw attention to the importance of water, access to safe drinking water, and the sustainable management of water resources, as well as the challenges related to pollution, drought, and climate change.
In 2026, the global theme is "Water and Gender", with the slogan "Where water flows, equality grows".
