Dead birds spotted on the Nistru near Pohrebea

Dead birds were spotted on the surface of the Nistru River, near the village of Pohrebea, Dubăsari district. It is unclear whether their deaths are related to the pollution of the Nistru, but Environmental Inspectors went to the scene to investigate.

Environmentalists have warned that the hydrocarbon spill could have serious effects on the Nistru ecosystem.

These are pollutants that entered the water following the Russian army's attack on the Novodnistrovsk Hydropower Plant in Ukraine. The first oil slicks were observed on March 10. Absorbent dams were subsequently installed to limit the spread of pollution.

However, due to the danger, water supplies were suspended for a week in the municipality of Balti and for shorter periods in Sângerei, Floreşti and Soroca.

Russia is directly to blame for the pollution of the Nistru, the main source of drinking water for the Republic of Moldova, the authorities in Chisinau said. The case is also being investigated by the Prosecutor General's Office.
