Security, economy and education: Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom expand bilateral ties

The Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom will enhance their cooperation in key areas, including security, defense, economy, and education. This commitment was solidified when the two countries signed a declaration to deepen their partnership during the fifth meeting of the bilateral Strategic Dialogue held in London.

The meeting aimed to assess bilateral relations and set priorities for the upcoming period. According to a statement, the parties highlighted the “strategic nature of the bilateral partnership” and reviewed “an excellent year in bilateral relations, marked by significant achievements and exceptional cooperation.”

The United Kingdom expressed appreciation for the democratic developments in the Republic of Moldova, noting that the parliamentary elections had “demonstrated democratic resilience in the face of external pressures and persistent threats.” The UK reaffirmed its “firm support for the sovereignty and European path of the Republic of Moldova” and recognized Moldova's contributions to regional security, including support for Ukraine's security.

Officials also noted progress in enhancing resilience to hybrid threats, particularly through collaboration in combating disinformation. Both sides “reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas such as security, defense sector reforms, combating serious and organized crime, and tackling illicit financing.” They emphasized the importance of international support for the country’s stability.

The dialogue demonstrated the expansion and deepening of the bilateral partnership, marked by intensified high-level commitments over the past year. Both sides acknowledged the planned visit of President Maia Sandu to the United Kingdom in 2025, which will include meetings with His Majesty the King and the Prime Minister.

The agenda of the dialogue also covered prospects for cooperation in education, including developing partnerships between universities and research institutions and expanding the bilateral legal framework.

In addition, a Dialogue in the Trade Configuration took place to strengthen economic relations and promote sustainable growth.

In conclusion, both states "committed to further developing their close cooperative relationship," continuing through the Strategic Dialogue and other bilateral channels throughout 2026 and beyond.
