Romania to build bridges in every Moldova border district

Romania aims to construct a road bridge for every Moldovan border district within the next seven years. Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, Secretary of State at the Romanian Ministry of Transport, announced the ambitious infrastructure roadmap.

The plan, targeting completion by 2030, seeks to establish a robust network of connections. Currently, four new bridges over the Prut River are under development, including the Fălciu-Cantemir, Bumbăta-Leova, and Răducăneni-Bărboieni crossings.

Strategic infrastructure milestones

Feasibility studies for these locations are complete. Simultaneously, essential existing bridges at Sculeni, Oancea-Cahul, and Albița-Leușeni are undergoing modernization or full reconstruction to handle increased traffic.

Construction at the historic "Bridge of Flowers" in Ungheni is progressing on schedule. Metal deck segments are currently being installed on the Romanian side and will soon reach the Moldovan bank.

Railway and highway integration

A landmark railway test between Fălciu and Cantemir recently proved successful. For the first time in three decades, a train crossed the border without requiring a gauge change, optimizing freight transit from the Port of Constanța.

The A8 Highway (Târgu Neamț–Iași–Ungheni) has also reached a critical phase. Authorities expect construction on the final cross-border section and the Berești intermodal hub to begin by Spring 2027.

Restoring passenger travel

The project includes the first-ever electrification of a European-gauge track in Moldova on the Iași-Ungheni segment. This modernization will eventually extend to Chișinău, reducing costs and transit times.

Public transport will also see a revival. Plans are underway to relaunch passenger trains on local routes, such as Cahul-Galați and Fălciu-Cantemir, aimed at strengthening economic and social ties between border communities.
