Moldovan students showcased traditional dishes, costumes, and songs at Iași’s “Dor de Basarabia” festival

Traditional Moldovan dishes, folk costumes, and old songs were showcased as the residents of Iași explored the rich traditions of Moldova, thanks to the Moldovan students studying in Romania. For the third consecutive year, they organized the "Dor de Basarabia" festival. Sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) and Moldovan wine were the most popular items at the event.
"The dishes at the festival represent various regions of the Republic of Moldova, including the south, center, and north. They are prepared by our volunteers and their mothers. Only the customs officials know how much food was sent through customs," said Georgeta Nicoară, the organizer.
A highlight of this edition was the workshop, where participants were guided by a housewife to learn how to prepare Guguţă's Cuşma.
"I've come for the third time, and I realized that this is the third year the festival has been organized. I was especially curious about Guguţă's Cuşma; that was what attracted me the most."
When asked what she enjoys about the festival, one attendee reminisced, "Let me remember the old days. I had an aunt in Bassarabia, my father-in-law's sister, and I visited her long ago. I can't even recall the village anymore; it's been so many decades. Being here brings back memories of how they lived, and I really enjoy that."
When asked about her feelings while attending the festival, she replied, "It clearly evokes a sense of melancholy."

The festival is organized annually by the Association of Romanian Youth Abroad in Iași.
"When we talk about the Republic of Moldova, we refer to its traditional clothing and delicious dishes that visitors have the opportunity to taste and experience. We also celebrate through cinema and handmade crafts. We are proud to bring a piece of the Republic of Moldova to Iași, allowing the public here to enjoy all of these offerings," stated Alexandru Lupu, the president of the Association.

The guests also enjoyed artistic performances featuring Moldovan dances by ensembles from the Republic of Moldova.
"Dor de Basarabia" is part of the True Basarabia Campaign organized by the Association of Romanian Youth Abroad.
