Ukrainian Ambassador on EU accession obstacles for Moldova and Ukraine: “No one can forbid a people from shaping its future”
Integration into the European Union is a priority for Ukraine, and the European path of the Republic of Moldova is a choice of its people that cannot be hindered by other states, says the Ambassador of Ukraine to Chisinau, Paun Rohovei. The diplomat spoke about the accession process of the two countries during the August 9 edition of the "Dimensiunea Diplomatica" program on Moldova 1.
According to Ambassador Rohovei, both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova have made significant progress in a short period, despite Ukraine’s European path unfolding amid a large-scale war initiated by Russia. The diplomat emphasized that any obstacles to integration should be addressed through negotiations and diplomatic channels.
"Integration into the European Union is a top priority for Ukraine," the ambassador stated, highlighting that Kiev's foreign policy consists of two major components: European integration and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Regarding the Republic of Moldova, Rohovei affirmed that European integration is the choice of its citizens and that this decision must be honored.
"No one has the right, either morally or under international law, to prevent a people from realizing their future as they see fit," the diplomat said.
He underscored that both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova have shown their capability to progress rapidly in the European integration process. He drew a parallel with the experiences of other countries that have joined the EU, specifically mentioning Romania, where he previously worked at the Ukrainian embassy.
"I have witnessed the European integration processes of various countries; in fact, I was in Romania during its EU accession and observed the negotiations. There were challenges everywhere, but impressive progress was made in a relatively short time. We have made extraordinary strides, especially given that Ukraine is currently in a state of war," said the ambassador.
Rohovei acknowledged that there are still attempts to create obstacles for both nations in their European integration journey. He stressed that these issues must be resolved through dialogue and negotiation, without undermining the strategic goals of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
"In a civilized world, any obstacle can be overcome through negotiations and diplomatic means. While there are indeed attempts to hinder progress, both the Republic of Moldova and, particularly, Ukraine have demonstrated that with dedication and hard work, these challenges can be surmounted," Rohovei stated.
The diplomat also recalled that Ukraine had previously faced difficulties at the onset of its accession negotiations, but these hurdles were ultimately overcome.
"We experienced challenges when starting negotiations, and obstacles arose, particularly for Ukraine, but we were able to overcome them," he concluded.
We remind you that the Republic of Moldova has made significant progress in its accession process to the European Union. On July 14, a new set of negotiation chapters was officially opened, focusing on foreign policy, security, defense, and common commercial policy.
Our country submitted its application for EU membership in 2022, alongside Ukraine, shortly after the onset of the large-scale Russian invasion.
Later that same year, the Republic of Moldova was granted candidate status.
On June 15, the European Union officially commenced negotiations on Cluster 1 with our country. The accession process consists of 33 chapters, which are organized into six clusters.
