NBS has launched "GeoStatistica", an interactive map of population, buildings, and housing
Data on the country's population, buildings, and housing can now be viewed on a single interactive map. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has launched the "GeoStatistica" portal, a tool that combines statistical and spatial data to provide a clear picture of socio-economic phenomena in Moldova.
In the initial phase, the platform makes available data collected during the 2024 Population and Housing Census. Users can compare statistical indicators across territorial units—from development regions and districts to the local level—and download datasets for their own analysis.
Over time, the platform will be expanded to include indicators from other fields and new time series.
Built on a modern GIS (Geographic Information System) foundation, the portal runs directly in the browser and requires no additional software installation.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) notes that the portal will be in a testing phase until October 18.
During this period, citizens, researchers, and specialists are invited to explore the features and submit suggestions for improvement by completing an online questionnaire.
"We invite all users to access the 'GeoStatistica' portal and explore the new possibilities for visualizing statistical data on interactive maps. The NBS will continue to take public feedback into account, developing new features and enhancing existing ones to ensure the tool best meets information and geospatial analysis needs," the NBS stated.
The 2024 Population and Housing Census estimated the population of the Republic of Moldova at over 2.4 million, with a demographic structure dominated by women (52.9%) and a median age of 40.6 years.
Ethnically, most residents are Moldovans/Romanians (84.7%). Furthermore, most citizens identify as Orthodox Christian and live in over one million households.
