Prime Minister Vasile Tofan in New York: "We rely on UN cooperation for reforms and resilience"
The Republic of Moldova is counting on the United Nations (UN) to strengthen resilience and advance reforms and its European integration path. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan conveyed this message during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the constant support provided by the UN for the modernization of the Republic of Moldova, including in the areas of justice and public administration reform, economic and social development, strengthening energy resilience, and adapting to climate change.
"The Republic of Moldova is building a modern, democratic European state, and the UN is a key partner in this process. We continue to rely on this cooperation to advance reforms and strengthen the country's resilience," stated Prime Minister Tofan.
During discussions on regional security, the Head of Government reiterated Moldova's commitment to the peaceful resolution of the Transnistrian conflict and the maintenance of regional stability.
At the same time, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the country's solidarity with Ukraine and its support for a just and lasting peace, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
The dialogue also addressed future priorities for the partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the United Nations.
"The Government will contribute to the development of the new Cooperation Framework for the 2028–2032 period, ensuring that the support provided aligns with the country's development goals and its European integration agenda," stated a press release issued by the Government.
We remind you that in New York, during the general debates of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, our country's delegation is led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi; on the sidelines of the meeting, they held several bilateral talks and participated in international forums focused on security and the regional situation.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met with the Prime Minister of Ireland, Michael Martin, and his Dutch counterpart, Rob Jetten. The Head of Government also met with former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The Moldovan delegation also participated in other international forums. Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi attended the Crimea Platform meeting held in Washington.
This week, the Republic of Moldova also joined a joint declaration signed by over 50 UN member states, calling on the Russian Federation to implement a complete, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine and to return to negotiations for a just and lasting peace.
On September 26, the Prime Minister delivered a speech at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, addressing the Republic of Moldova’s European path, the country's security and resilience, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the right of states—regardless of size—to determine their own future. This year's meeting is dedicated to the transformations the international community is undergoing and to strengthening confidence in multilateral cooperation.
