Eight candidates, six independent and two party-backed, are running for Governor of Gagauzia

Eight contenders for Governor of Gagauzia have applied to register for the election—six independent candidates and two backed by parties.

The candidates in question are independents Cornel Dudnic, Alexandr Stoianoglo, Petru Vlah, Oleg Garizan, Ivanna Koksal, and Sergei Anastasov, as well as Ivan Cîlcic (nominated by the Gagauz People's Party) and Fiodor Gagauz (nominated by the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova), stated Svetlana Colesnic, interim chairwoman of the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia (CECG), speaking to Teleradio-Moldova.

According to her, the first candidate could be registered as early as today, October 1, after the CECG reviews their file.

"Today, the first candidate is scheduled for review at the meeting with a view to registration. The other seven have not yet been registered. We are currently verifying—within a seven-day timeframe—the submissions of those who have turned in their signature lists. At the same time, there are candidates who have not yet submitted their signature lists or their registration applications," the interim CECG chairwoman noted.

To date, signature lists have been issued to Cornel Dudnic, Alexandr Stoianoglo, Petru Vlah, Oleg Garizan, and Ivanna Koksal. The electoral authority must verify these lists before registering the candidates.

Cornel Dudnic and Alexandr Stoianoglo have already drawn lots to determine their order on the ballot paper. "Dudnic and Stoianoglo have already drawn lots. This means that, should they be registered, they will occupy the corresponding positions on the ballot," added Svetlana Colesnic.

The document submission period ends on October 6. The submitted files will be reviewed, and decisions on candidate registration or refusal will be issued within seven days of receiving the complete set of documents.

The election campaign will begin on October 16, when registered electoral contenders will be able to present their programs and platforms to voters.

The election for the position of Bashkan will take place on November 15, on the same day as the elections for the People's Assembly of Gagauzia.
