Igor Dodon’s brother arrested in Moldova on corruption charges

The brother of the former President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, was placed in the National Anti-Corruption Center (CNA) detention facility after being arrested on the evening of February 5, 2025, at Chișinău International Airport.

According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, Alexandru Dodon is under investigation in a criminal case for illicit enrichment, and an arrest warrant had previously been issued, as his whereabouts were unknown. Upon returning to the country, he was arrested by the authorities and informed of the charges against him. After being questioned, he was placed in detention.

The criminal case was initiated in 2022, and anti-corruption prosecutors are continuing their investigation, collecting evidence and identifying all individuals involved. The investigation remains ongoing as of February 6.

Former President Igor Dodon reacted to his brother’s arrest at Chișinău International Airport, claiming that it was a political pressure tactic aimed at him.

“My brother faces no charges other than those related to my political case. Long before, he had informed the prosecutor's office of his return to the country today, specifying his route, date, and time. He was willing to accept a subpoena from the Prosecutor's Office. But someone in power decided to apply terror, not the law,” Igor Dodon wrote on his Facebook page.

The former head of state compared this arrest to other cases in which individuals involved in criminal acts “remain free” and believes there is a political motive behind his brother's arrest. “The real objective is to exert political pressure on me. We will resist and demonstrate that justice is on our side,” Dodon declared.
