Moldova allocates 1.2 billion lei for heating bill compensation

A total of 1.2 billion lei (60 million euro), contributed by several partner countries, will be allocated to the compensation fund to cover the rise in heating bills. Prime Minister Dorin Recean made the announcement following a meeting of the Commission for Exceptional Situations (CES).

In a post on his Facebook account, the Prime Minister stated that citizens enrolled in the compensation program will receive monetary aid ranging from 500 to 1,400 lei (€25,73-€72,04 ) for the heating season, including for the month of March.

Additionally, 30 million euros from the European Union’s emergency humanitarian aid will be transferred to Energocom's account, which has recently used its own funds to purchase 20 million euros worth of gas for the left bank of the Dniester and 10 million euros worth of electricity for the right bank.

"We made these decisions today, through the CES, so that citizens can benefit without delay from the European Union's aid, which was specifically provided to prevent a security and humanitarian crisis intentionally caused by the Russian Federation," said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The Prime Minister reminded that today marks the end of the 60-day period during which the state of emergency was declared and that it "will not be extended for the time being." Dorin Recean stated that "at this stage, the necessary conditions have been created to ensure the supply of natural gas to the Transnistrian region, making the state of emergency unnecessary." "This was necessary to purchase gas and electricity, as Russia had stopped gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region," the Prime Minister added.

It is important to note that the state of emergency in the energy sector took effect on December 16, 2024, following Parliament's decision. The reasons given at that time were that Moldova faced a serious risk of an energy crisis, as Gazprom had halted natural gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region. Prime Minister Dorin Recean is scheduled to present the report on the 60-day state of emergency to Parliament next week.
