36 years since the end of the Afghanistan war. Maia Sandu: "Let's keep the peace and not remain indifferent to the tragedy that is happening right next to us"

Today, February 15, it turns 36 years since the end of the war in Afghanistan, a conflict in which over 12,500 Moldovans were sent to fight, and 301 never returned home. In this context, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, sent a commemorative message, recalling the sacrifice of veterans and the suffering of their families.

"36 years have passed since the end of the war in Afghanistan, but many of those who were sent to fight there have not escaped this trauma even today. Today, we pay tribute to the fallen and remember those who lived with the consequences of this bloody conflict. We bow before their sacrifice and the suffering of the families who waited for them in vain or welcomed them home changed forever”, said the head of state.

Maia Sandu compared the Afghanistan war with the war in Ukraine, noting that the tragic history of conflicts is repeating itself. “At our border, we see death and destruction. Numerous destinies are torn apart in an unjust, unjustified war waged by Russia against Ukraine. War only brings suffering. Let us keep the peace and not remain indifferent to the tragedy that is happening next to us”, the president said.

The Afghan-Soviet war began on December 24, 1979 and lasted nine years. Due to the high cost and final political futility of this military conflict, the war in Afghanistan has often been likened to the Second Indochina War.
