Victims of the war in Ukraine commemorated in Chisinau
The Republic of Moldova marked today three years since the start of the war in Ukraine through a series of commemorative and solidarity events. The day started with a flower-laying ceremony at the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau, where several officials paid tribute to the victims of the conflict. Also today, hundreds of people protested in front of the Russian Embassy, called for peace and condemned the aggression against Ukraine. In the evening, the Parliament building was illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, and a symbolic flashmob occurred in the square of the institution.

During the protest at the Russian Embassy, among the demonstrators I met Ela, a young woman from Russia who condemns the war. She took refuge in the Republic of Moldova and stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
“I want what happened in Russia not to happen in the Republic of Moldova, so that you can be free and have the right to choose,” said the young woman.
“We came to support the people, the Ukrainian people, we support the refugees from Moldova because it is very difficult to leave your country, your home, and come to a foreign country”;
“I think that today’s demonstration comes first of all to make us think more about the fragility of fundamental rights in the face of an aggressor,” the people said.
“Throughout these years, children, civilians have suffered, civilian infrastructure has been destroyed. And again, let me repeat, there is no lasting peace without justice and compensation for the victims of this war,” said Veaceslav Tofan, director of Amnesty International.
Representatives of several non-governmental organizations also protested in front of the Russian Embassy in Chisinau.
“For the fight against terrorists, occupiers and land slanderers. Putin and Trump want to divide the world, we do not agree, we will not give in”;
“We came to commemorate three years since the beginning of Russia’s criminal war, a war where thousands of innocent people die, both from Ukraine and Russia,” the people said.
As a sign of solidarity and support for the people of the neighboring country, this evening, the Parliament building was illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Also, a flashmob took place in the square of the institution, during which participants lit candles in the shape of the number 1096 – the number of days that have passed since the beginning of the war.
Participants in the event observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the war, sending messages of peace and good thoughts to the families who lost loved ones in the war in Ukraine.

We remind you that the authorities in Chisinau condemned the unjust war in Ukraine and sent messages of support to the Ukrainian people, who are heroically fighting for the independence and territorial integrity of the country.
We remind you that February 24, 2025 marks three years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has become the bloodiest in Europe since World War II. After three years of intense fighting, the human and material losses are devastating, and a diplomatic solution remains uncertain.
