A man from Germany, who has been living in the Republic of Moldova for five years, has converted his home in the village of Blindesti, Ungheni district, into a shelter. Jerry Knoll takes care of over 100 abandoned cats and 26 dogs.
Every rescued animal has its own story, says Jerry Knoll. Many of them arrive at his home injured, and he works diligently to treat them and restore their health.
To ensure these animals don't end up back on the streets, Jerry has created a special space in his yard where they can feel safe and comfortable.
“If you don’t care about cats, you won’t care about people either. Cats are easy to take care of, and they teach you a lot. If more people had a cat, the world would be different; I really believe that,” he stated on the show “Buna Dimineata” on Moldova 1.
The decision to establish a shelter came after he witnessed numerous cases of cruelty towards animals.
"I realized I had to keep them away from people. One time, a kitten was left in a bag hanging from the gate; if I hadn't gone outside then, it would have suffocated," Jerry recounted.
Caring for such a large number of animals requires significant effort and discipline. His daily routine starts with checking the condition of each cat, feeding them, and ensuring they are all healthy.
The story begins with Loony, a cat adopted by his wife. The man shares that when he moved to the Republic of Moldova, he was struck by the large number of stray animals.
"I came across many dead cats on the side of the road and numerous sick and hungry kittens," he explains.
Today, in addition to caring for over 100 cats, he also looks after 26 dogs.
He has made an appeal to the public, urging people not to remain indifferent when they encounter abandoned animals and to offer help whenever possible.
"Don't walk by carelessly. Try to help the animal; take it to a veterinarian. Many doctors offer free assistance. A small gesture can save a life," urged Jerry Knoll.
The man hopes that more people will recognize the need to protect stray animals and understand the responsibility involved. He believes that even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference.
