Moldovan producers will export duty-free to EFTA countries starting April
Producers from the Republic of Moldova will export to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein either duty-free or with significantly reduced tariffs. This will be possible starting April 1, when the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the member states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) comes into effect. Authorities emphasize that implementing this agreement is a key step in diversifying export markets and building a strong, European-integrated economy.

"Among the Republic of Moldova’s top export products with high potential in EFTA countries are wine and spirits, fresh fruits such as grapes, apples, plums, and cherries, as well as natural honey, sunflower oil, and oilseeds. Packaging, a sector with growing demand, along with clothing and footwear—an industry currently in need of new markets—also have significant opportunities," said Dumitru Alaiba, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization.
The minister highlighted that in recent years, under this agreement, 31% of Moldova’s exports of heater components and 30% of digital control panels have been destined for Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Additionally, the EFTA agreement creates new e-commerce opportunities.
"E-commerce in the Republic of Moldova is continuously growing, with online sales increasing by over 30% annually. That’s why the EFTA agreement opens major new opportunities in this sector as well," the minister said.
The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Republic of Moldova and EFTA member states was signed on June 27, 2023. It came into effect with Iceland on September 1, 2024, and with Norway on November 1, 2024. This year, the agreement will be implemented with Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
What is EFTA? Founded in 1960, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an international organization and free trade zone comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
