Fox vaccination campaign against rabies starts in Moldova

The spring campaign to vaccinate foxes against rabies is currently underway across the Republic of Moldova until May 11. The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) reports that special teams are distributing the vaccine baits manually.

ANSA states that the vaccine is not dangerous for pets but recommends restricting the movement of dogs and cats in the affected areas for two weeks.

This vaccination campaign, co-financed by the European Union and supported by Romania, aims to eliminate rabies in the Republic of Moldova. Rabies is a deadly disease, and vaccinating foxes plays a crucial role in protecting both animal and human health.

According to data published by ANSA in early March, an outbreak of rabies in foxes was reported in the Edineț district, specifically in the Blesteni locality. Another case was identified in the Anenii Noi district, Calfa village.

People are advised that if they come across an intact bait in an area away from children and pets, they should leave it undisturbed, wear gloves to protect their hands, and use a plastic bag to safely remove the bait, placing it in a wooded area. If they find bait with packaging that is opened, broken, or damaged, they should handle it with gloved hands, place it in a plastic bag, and notify their veterinarian for further action.
