Greece backs Moldova's EU path: A strategic investment

Greece will continue to be a firm advocate for the European future of the Republic of Moldova. In this regard, the Hellenic Republic is ready to offer technical support and share its experience to assist Moldova in its process of aligning with the EU's acquis communautaire.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made this statement during a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu, held in Chișinău. The Greek official reiterated Greece's unconditional support for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing that the enlargement of the European Union represents a strategic investment in peace and security.
"For us, enlargement has always been and remains a priority; it is a strategic investment that we, as Europeans, must make in the prosperity, peace, and security of the region. This is even more imperative today due to the geopolitical context in Europe, and I simply want to reiterate that we must maintain the credibility of this enlargement process. We must honor all the promises we have made to all these countries, showing that we are dedicated to reform and common values, because the future of the Western Balkans, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine is in Europe," declared Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
He welcomed the Republic of Moldova's progress towards EU accession, appreciating the reforms carried out under "extremely difficult" but necessary conditions for alignment with European standards. At the same time, the Greek Prime Minister underlined the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Greece.
"There is a very strong untapped potential to boost bilateral trade and especially to strengthen business ties. We have talked extensively about cooperation in the energy sector. Greece can contribute to improving the energy security of the Republic of Moldova through the Southern energy corridor and especially through that floating terminal in Alexandroupoli, and this actually allows Greece to become a very secure service provider for the entire region," emphasized the official.
For her part, President Maia Sandu thanked Greece for the support offered to Moldova and to the Moldovan diaspora, for decisions regarding social protection, as well as for supporting its European path.
"Greece and Moldova are friendly countries; our relations have deep roots in history. Today, our political dialogue is stronger than ever. Since 2023, embassies have been established in both capitals, in Chișinău and Athens, a clear sign of the desire to build a lasting partnership. The community of Moldovans in Greece plays an important role in our relationship; it is a well-integrated, hardworking community that contributes to the development of both countries. We are grateful for the support they receive from the Greek authorities, and we thank you for that," declared Maia Sandu.
It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, began an official visit to the Republic of Moldova today. The Greek Prime Minister was welcomed with military honors at the Government headquarters by his Moldovan counterpart, Dorin Recean.
