Moldova's high divorce rate: Causes & solutions

Moldova ranks 6th worldwide for its divorce rate per thousand inhabitants. The primary causes of divorce are infidelity, incompatibility, and domestic violence.
Psychologist Zinaida Gribincea stated today on Radio Moldova's "Zi de zi" (Day by Day) show that while every partner seeks to feel loved and respected, many factors impact a couple's well-being and relationship quality. As such, divorce sometimes becomes the only viable solution for both parties.
According to the expert, the decision to divorce is never easy, but it is a deliberate one.
"It's painful, regardless of the reasons. Especially in the aftermath, each partner needs time to overcome frustration or failure and is forced to restructure their thoughts, emotions, and even daily routine," Zinaida Gribincea explained.
The specialist added that incompatibility of character, temperament, or moral values, as well as a lack of trust, are the most common causes of divorce.
"Similarly, we can point to financial or economic problems, or the inability to adapt to the roles of husband, mother, or father and the responsibilities these roles entail, especially when children are involved," the psychologist explained on Radio Moldova.
People also separate due to a lack of communication, a failure to understand the other partner's perspective, or inadequate conflict resolution skills. Experts say that any form of abuse or violence can leave deep scars on the personalities of both partners and children.
The psychologist also noted that infidelity plays a significant role, as "it's a test not everyone passes."
A solution that could strengthen family bonds is effective communication, along with seeking professional help.
"Very often, couples simply don't communicate effectively. They don't understand, nor do they try to understand, the other's perspective. And another issue is our lingering reluctance to seek professional help," Zinaida Gribincea noted.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, over 9,500 divorces were recorded in Moldova last year, a 1.7% decrease compared to 2023. The average age of spouses at the time of divorce was 41.5 years for men and 38.4 years for women.
The highest percentage of divorces occurred among couples married for less than 5 years (25.5%), followed by those who remained married for 10 to 14 years (23.5%). The average duration of marriages ending in divorce was 11.9 years.
According to the same source, 14,800 marriages were recorded in 2024, 6% fewer than in 2023.
