Historic EU-Moldova Summit set for July 4 in Chișinău

The unprecedented European Union-Republic of Moldova Summit, set for July 4, showcases the European Union’s genuine and unwavering commitment to our country's European path, President Maia Sandu announced today in an interview with NordNews.
The head of state emphasized that the meeting will specifically address the current status of accession negotiations and the next steps in the European integration process. According to her, partners from Brussels are arriving with a clear, results-oriented agenda.
"Our partners from Brussels are serious. They're coming to discuss concrete next steps in the European Union accession process—both for the coming year and the immediate period ahead. So, this is further proof that we aren't peddling illusions; instead, we have a tangible process unfolding right now. It’s not a facade; it's reality. That's simply the way things are," Maia Sandu declared.
During the summit, clear objectives will be established for the next six months, aimed at accelerating the completion of accession negotiations. Following this process, the ratification phase of Moldova's accession across all European Union member states will commence.
"This summit is a productive one, if you will. We'll have very specific discussions about our progress within this process and how we're to advance. It's a framework where we'll clearly establish: these are our achievements to date, and over the next six months, we must take the necessary subsequent steps to shorten the negotiation completion timeframe. Following this, the ratification process will commence in all member states—a second distinct process," the head of state added.
According to the head of state, the Republic of Moldova is making significant headway in the European integration process. The President announced that the screening process, which assesses the conformity of national legislation with EU norms, is expected to conclude this autumn. This stage will offer a clear understanding of the subsequent steps.
"Today, the European Parliament released a statement commending the Republic of Moldova for the substantial progress made on its commitments," Maia Sandu stated.
Simultaneously, the President also highlighted the Growth Plan for the Republic of Moldova – the largest support package ever extended to our nation, valued at 1.9 billion euros. These funds are earmarked for infrastructure development, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and investing in education.
"These measures are essential for stimulating the economy and enhancing the quality of life for our citizens, particularly amidst regional challenges and recent crises," the head of state added.
The European Union will be represented by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the inaugural Republic of Moldova - European Union summit, set to take place in Chișinău on July 4.
The meeting, scheduled for 5:00 PM at the State Residence, will be hosted by President Maia Sandu, a press release from the Presidency confirms.
In addition to the head of state, Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean will participate in the event on behalf of the Republic of Moldova. The European integration process, ongoing reforms, energy challenges, and the implications of Russia's war against Ukraine will be the main topics for discussion among European officials.
