Bender escapee arrested in Cimișlia
The inmate who escaped from Penitentiary No. 8 in Bender on May 16 was tracked down and detained by law enforcement. According to the General Inspectorate of Police, he was found last night in a village in the Cimișlia district, where he had been hiding to evade arrest.
The detainee is currently in custody. Police are conducting investigations to determine whether he committed any other crimes while on the run.
Under the Criminal Code, escaping from detention carries an additional sentence of up to three years.
According to data from the National Penitentiary Administration (ANP) provided to IPN, there have been five escapes in 2025—the highest number recorded in the past five years. These incidents occurred in Penitentiary No. 9 (Pruncul), No. 1 (Taraclia), No. 8 (Bender), and No. 13 (Chișinău). Additionally, an escape attempt was reported this year at Penitentiary No. 18 (Brănești).
