Prosecutor General’s Office denies Plahotniuc lawyer’s claims: Greece confirmed receipt of extradition file on July 25

The Prosecutor General's Office rejected the claims made by Lucian Rogac, the lawyer for Vlad Plahotniuc, suggesting that the authorities in the Republic of Moldova are delaying the transmission of documents needed for the extradition of the oligarch from Greece. According to Acting Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon, the Greek authorities confirmed that they received the necessary documents on July 25 of this year.

Rogac stated today in a video message that the extradition request was signed last week; however, not all the documents requested by the Greek authorities have been submitted yet.

“Given that Mr. Plahotniuc voluntarily agreed to be extradited, this process is expected to take between 12 and 30 days, according to Greek judicial practices. On July 29, his lawyers were informed that the relevant documents from the Republic of Moldova had not yet arrived,” the lawyer explained.

In contrast, the acting Prosecutor General, Alexandru Machidon, denied these allegations, asserting that the Greek authorities received all necessary documents as early as July 25.

"We inform you that on July 25, 2025, the Prosecutor General's Office was officially notified by the Greek authorities regarding the electronic receipt of the extradition request and all documents required for the extradition procedure," Machidon told Teleradio-Moldova.

Machidon also stated that he would not comment on every public statement or speculation, referring to Rogac's statements as "attempts to distort reality and misinform public opinion."

According to the procedure, the Greek authorities will review the request and issue a decision regarding the extradition of Vlad Plahotniuc to the Republic of Moldova.

It is important to note that, after fleeing the Republic of Moldova in June 2019, oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc and former Democratic MP Constantin Țuțu were detained at Athens Airport on July 22, 2025, while attempting to board a plane to Dubai. Plahotniuc and Țuțu are currently in Greece's largest prison, holding pre-trial detention warrants for 40 days.

Vladimir Plahotniuc has officially agreed to be extradited to the Republic of Moldova. His consent was submitted to the Greek authorities on Tuesday, July 29, through a letter from his lawyer in Greece.

Experts believe that the extradition request could expedite Plahotniuc's appearance before the Moldovan courts.

In the Republic of Moldova, Plahotniuc is under investigation in four criminal cases, which include charges of creating an organized criminal group, large-scale money laundering, fraud, and involvement in "bank fraud" from 2013 to 2015.
