Moldova reiterates EU commitment, calls out Russia at UN conference

The Republic of Moldova's European Union integration process, the challenges facing our country, and the upcoming autumn parliamentary elections were the main topics addressed by Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu in Geneva during meetings with his counterparts from several states.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the World Conference of Parliamentary Speakers, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations.
During his meeting with Numan Kurtulmuş, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Igor Grosu noted that "the upcoming autumn elections are very important because they will determine Moldova's future course."
Regarding the EU accession process and the progress our nation has made, the head of the legislative body highlighted Turkey's support for Moldova. Consequently, the officials agreed to intensify inter-parliamentary communication and cooperation.
In discussions with Andreas Norlén, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Speaker Igor Grosu thanked him for the assistance provided to Ukraine, which has also been defending the Republic of Moldova for over three years.
"Sweden is one of the Republic of Moldova's largest bilateral donors and consistently helps us, especially in the energy sector, both by strengthening our energy resilience and with direct aid to citizens to help them cope with bill payments. Moldova has strong partners on its European path. Thank you for all your support," Igor Grosu emphasized.
Similarly, the head of the legislative body discussed the security situation in Europe and bilateral relations with Yerlan Koshanov, the Speaker of the Majilis of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The officials agreed on opportunities to advance cooperation in key areas such as agriculture and exports. The Speaker of the Majilis of the Republic of Kazakhstan also expressed interest in the progress our nation has made in the European Union accession process.
According to a parliamentary statement, Igor Grosu also held discussions with the representative of another important partner for the Republic of Moldova in its European Union accession process – namely, Latvia. The head of the legislative body thanked Antonina Ņenaševa, the Deputy Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, for the assistance provided to our country, especially for aligning with European requirements.

It should be noted that Speaker Igor Grosu reiterated, from the podium of the World Conference of Parliamentary Speakers, the Republic of Moldova's commitment to peace, democracy, and European integration. The official thanked democratic countries for their essential support for internal reforms and resilience against external threats, and for their backing of Ukraine. He also launched a call for solidarity to "jointly uphold peace, democracy, and unity."

The World Conference of Parliamentary Speakers is taking place from July 29 to 31. This sixth edition of the meeting is hosted at the Palace of Nations, the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The event's agenda includes a plenary debate and several discussion panels covering inter-parliamentary cooperation, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, the role of parliaments in shaping the digital future, and the protecting and promoting the rights of vulnerable persons.
The World Conference of Parliamentary Speakers is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations. The meeting occurs every five years and serves as a forum for high-level engagement and dialogue among parliamentary leaders worldwide.
