Ex-communist MP Sergiu Stati convicted of illicit enrichment: nearly 2 million lei in illegal income

Sergiu Stati, a former communist MP and ex-ambassador with special missions, was convicted on August 14 by the Buiucani Court in Chisinau for illicit enrichment. The court imposed a fine of 450,000 lei and prohibited him from holding public positions for a period of 12 years.

According to the evidence, during his time as deputy and ambassador for special missions between February 2014 and July 2019, Stati allegedly accumulated assets valued at almost two million lei above his legal income. These assets include apartments, a car, various valuables, and significant amounts of undeclared money. The court statement indicates, "It was found, based on the evidence, that these could not have been obtained legally."

To ensure payment of the fine of 450,000 lei and a special confiscation amounting to nearly two million lei, the court ordered the seizure of half of a 105.8 m² apartment, valued at over 1.42 million lei. Additionally, 44,800 euros and 34,900 dollars were submitted for administration to the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency within the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The court stated, “The state must recover the assets resulting from the crime, as well as any income obtained from their exploitation.”

This decision can be appealed to the Central Court of Appeal within 15 days.
