Machidon wins contest for Moldova's top prosecutor

The Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) is set to propose Alexandru Machidon as Moldova’s next Prosecutor General, pending a successful external evaluation of his financial and ethical integrity.
The current interim Prosecutor General won the competition organized by the SCP on Tuesday, August 19, for the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office.
The council’s decision came after it interviewed the two candidates for the position on Tuesday. Mr Machidon won with 8.86 points, ahead of his rival Victor Furtună, the acting head of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, who scored 8.23.
Explaining his reasons for entering the contest, Mr Machidon cited his "more than 17 years of professional experience" within the prosecutorial system.
The SCP is set to propose Mr Machidon’s candidacy to Moldova’s President. However, his appointment by presidential decree requires a positive report from the Ethical and Financial Evaluation Commission.
SCP President Dumitru Obadă said it was their duty to "validate or, if necessary, invalidate" the Vetting Commission’s report and "issue the corresponding decree." He added that they aimed to "exclude interim appointments and ensure stability in the role."
Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov said the post was "extremely important" for Moldova as it pursues a "very ambitious reform agenda" to join the European Union. She added that the justice system must be an "integral part" of these reforms.
The SCP is currently awaiting the results of the external evaluation of Mr Machidon and, depending on the outcome, will or will not propose him to the head of state for designation as Prosecutor General by presidential decree.
The competition for the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office was launched on June 12, with applications submitted until July 21.
It is worth noting that the position of Prosecutor General became vacant after Ion Munteanu's appointment as a judge to the Supreme Court of Justice. On May 26, President Maia Sandu signed the decree releasing him from his position.
Since 2016, the Prosecutor General has been elected by the Superior Council of Prosecutors for a seven-year term.
