Moldova election 2025: Parties can change candidate lists before campaign begins

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that political parties and electoral blocs registered for the general election on September 28 can request changes to their candidate lists, under specific conditions outlined by law.

According to the CEC, before the start of the campaign, political parties can replace a withdrawn candidate or add new names to their registered lists. The decision must be made by the party’s central body and submitted to the CEC as a resolution confirmed by meeting minutes. The Commission has a maximum of five days from the request’s submission to make a decision on the list modifications or to issue credentials for the new candidates.

The CEC has also reminded parties that a 40% gender quota must be respected for every list modification, meaning a minimum of four candidates of the same sex for every ten places.

Additionally, no later than September 18—ten days before the election—parties and independent candidates can request a change in the order of candidates, the exclusion of some, or even the withdrawal of the entire list. Independent candidates also have the right to withdraw their candidacy.

A total of 19 electoral contestants have been accepted by the CEC to participate in the upcoming election, including 12 political parties, four blocs, and three independent candidates. The CEC has so far received a record 50 applications for the parliamentary election. The final list of registered candidates is scheduled for official publication on August 28. The campaign will officially begin on August 29 and conclude on September 26.
