Moldova secures gas supply until 2026 amid new energy plan

Moldova has bought approximately 620 million cubic metres of gas, enough to cover estimated consumption until September 2026, the country's Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu announced on the Moldova 1 show, "IN CONTEXT."
According to updated figures from Energocom, the country’s state-owned energy company, gas purchases are currently 80% complete. About 620 million cubic metres have been secured for the 2025-2026 heating season. The minister said the gas year begins on 1 October 2025 and these volumes are estimated to meet consumption needs until 31 September 2026.
He also said that state-owned company Energocom was given the public service obligation by Moldova’s energy regulator, ANRE, from August, making it responsible for gas procurement and creating a safety stock.
He added that from 1 October 2025, gas bills will feature the Energocom logo and will be issued after the first month of consumption in September.
"Based on this obligation, Energocom has been and continues to make gas acquisitions and is creating a safety stock," Junghietu explained. "Energocom is currently negotiating the commercial terms of the contract it concluded with Moldovagaz for certain services provided during the transition period, until Energocom is fully equipped to issue gas bills."
Meanwhile, Moldovagaz will retain its role as a distributor, taking gas from the transmission system operator and delivering it to the supplier. The company has also been temporarily appointed as the entity responsible for supplying gas to the Transnistrian region.
"It will retain its distribution activity, receiving gas from the transmission system operator and delivering it to the gas supplier," Junghietu specified. "At the same time, SA 'Moldovagaz' has been designated for a period as the entity that will supply gas to the left bank of the Dniester, where non-licensed operators are active, in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Moldova."
The minister stressed that the authorities' priority is to protect Moldova from potential energy crises. The government and the European Union are actively maintaining a €60m support mechanism for gas purchases for the Transnistrian region.
Referring to energy security, Junghietu highlighted that Moldova's vulnerability regarding gas supply has been eliminated with the commissioning of the Iași-Ungheni import-transport gas pipeline.
"This vulnerability has been completely eliminated. Two or three weeks ago, when that attack occurred on the Danube, all the necessary gas for both the right and left banks was imported through the Iași-Ungheni pipeline," the official noted.
The Moldovan government has approved an action plan to ensure stable energy supplies for the 2025-2026 heating season, including by diversifying natural gas sources and strengthening energy security.
Furthermore, from August, state-owned company Energocom has taken over the operation of the natural gas supply infrastructure for citizens on the right bank of the Dniester. ANRE withdrew Moldovagaz’s license for natural gas supply after it failed to meet the conditions for the unbundling of production, transport, and distribution activities by 31 July, which were imposed this past April.
ANRE mandated that Moldovagaz and Energocom implement all necessary organisational measures by the end of August, ensuring that the supply of natural gas to final consumers is not affected.
Moldovagaz will be responsible for supplying natural gas to the Transnistrian region until 31 March 2026.
